Huguette Caland Biography
Huguette Caland, born Huguette El Khoury on January 19, 1931, in Beirut, Lebanon, was a multifaceted artist whose work spanned painting, sculpture, and fashion design. She was the daughter of Bechara El Khoury, the first post-independence president of Lebanon, a position that placed her in a unique socio-political context from an early age. Despite the conservative expectations surrounding her as a woman in a prominent Lebanese family, Caland charted a path that was uniquely her own, marked by a relentless pursuit of artistic freedom and a celebration of the female form.
Caland's early life was traditional in many respects. She married Paul Caland, the nephew of the founder of the pro-French newspaper L’Orient, at the age of 21 and had three children. However, her passion for art was evident from a young age, as she filled her room with drawings and paintings, creating an imaginary world that was distinctly hers. This passion for art led her to enroll at the American University of Beirut in 1964, the same year her father passed away. This period marked a significant turning point in her life, as she began to explore her artistic voice more freely.
In 1970, Caland made a bold move that would define the rest of her career. She left her husband and children in Lebanon and moved to Paris to immerse herself in the city's bohemian culture and pursue her art. This decision was not driven by a desire to escape her responsibilities but by a need for artistic and personal freedom. In Paris, she became a regular guest at the Feraud studio, where she met many artists and intellectuals. Her work during this period began to focus on the body, particularly the female form, in ways that were both abstract and deeply personal. She explored themes of eroticism, desire, and the sensual possibilities of the human body, often using her own body as a source of inspiration.
Caland's art from this period is characterized by its bold lines, vibrant colors, and abstract representations of the female form. Her "Bribes de corps" series, for example, features curvilinear forms that suggest exaggerated features of the human figure, painted in a muted palette that belies the provocative nature of the work. These pieces reflect Caland's interest in depicting the body in a simplified visual language while implicating her own physicality as source material.
In 1987, after 17 years in Paris, Caland moved to Los Angeles, where she continued to develop her artistic practice. She became an integral part of the city's artistic scene, forming connections with notable artists and thinkers. Her home and studio in Venice, designed by architect Neil Kaufman but bearing Caland's unique imprint, became a nexus for the artistic community. Despite her consistent international exhibition history, Caland remained relatively unknown locally, exhibiting in Los Angeles on only a handful of occasions.
Caland's work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions worldwide, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Tate St. Ives in the UK, and the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles. Her art is included in private and public collections across the Middle East, Europe, and the United States, attesting to her significant impact on contemporary art.
Huguette Caland passed away on September 23, 2019, in Beirut, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire artists and art lovers alike. Her work stands as a testament to the power of artistic expression to challenge societal norms, explore the complexities of the human condition, and celebrate the beauty of the female form. Through her art, Caland carved out a space for herself that was both deeply personal and universally resonant, making her one of the most influential Lebanese artists of her time.
